Freelancing: freedom… or fatigue?
How to manage your time without losing your mind
Is your freelance life measuring up to expectations?
Ah, freelancing — the dream! No commute, no boss breathing down your neck, no awkward small talk about the weather while waiting for the kettle to boil. Just you, your laptop, and a never-ending to-do list that seems to have acquired sentience.
Yes, being your own boss sounds idyllic until you realise your boss (you) is a bit of a tyrant who never gives you a lunch break and expects you to reply to emails at 10pm. So, let’s talk about how to manage your time without burning out.
1. Stop being “always available”
You are not a 24-hour emergency helpline. Unless your freelance gig involves life-saving surgery (and if it does, please stop reading this and get back to the patient), your clients can wait until the morning.
That little dopamine hit from replying instantly might feel productive, but it’s actually just making you twitchier than a pigeon on espresso.
Set boundaries. Turn off notifications. But — and this is important — don’t swing the other way and vanish into the ether for days. Clients like responsiveness, not radio silence.
Find your middle ground: reply within working hours, but don’t feel the need to leap on every ping. The exception of course is unless you have agreed an out of hours response brief with your client – for example if you are managing their social channels or managing an incident – but this should be explicit in your work agreement and still have some guardrails in place for you.
2. For the love of sandwiches, take a lunch break
You wouldn’t forget to feed a pet, so why do you forget to feed yourself? Step away from the screen, make a proper meal (crisps don’t count), and give your brain a moment to reboot.
You’ll find your afternoon productivity shoots up — plus, it gives you something to talk about when someone asks how your day’s going besides “I stared at a spreadsheet until it stared back.”
3. Watch out for “mission creep”
You know that lovely, loyal client who “just needs a quick extra bit added”? Spoiler: it’s never quick and it’s never extra. It’s unpaid overtime in disguise.
Be polite but firm. If they want more work, great — quote for it! You’re a professional, not a Buy One Get One Free offer.
4. Don’t do emails on the school run
Look, we’ve all been there. You’re walking briskly, coffee in one hand, phone in the other, half-listening to a child explain the complex social dynamics of Year 4. But that email? It can wait.
Freelancing is about flexibility, yes — but it’s also about being present. Whether that’s with your family, your mates, or your own sandwich (see point two), give yourself permission to not multitask occasionally. Your brain needs time away from screens to process and create – give it a chance and importantly, remember why you are freelancing.
5. Boundaries are brilliant (but don’t be a robot)
Yes, we’ve just spent 500 words preaching about boundaries. But here’s the caveat: don’t take it too far. Life happens. Sometimes a quick evening email saves a bigger headache tomorrow.
Think of boundaries like elastic — firm enough to hold shape, but stretchy enough to adapt when needed. The goal is balance, not bureaucracy.
All too often we erode the benefits of freelancing through unhealthy work patterns. Taking a breath, going for a walk, grabbing your yoga mat for half an hour or going to a daytime gym class – these things are fine to work into your day; however, sitting down binge-watching the latest Netflix series – that’s probably going too far and your might need to focus on your business development.
Final thought: freelance, don’t fizzle
Freelancing should feel freeing — not like you’ve built yourself a very small, very demanding office cubicle in your living room.
Be kind to yourself. Take breaks. Know your worth. And remember: the beauty of freelancing isn’t just flexibility in your work, it’s flexibility in your life.
Now, close your inbox, make yourself a proper cuppa, and enjoy the smug satisfaction of someone who’s got their freelance life (mostly) together.
